Ghost hunting was the gateway that led the four of us into everything The 108 Effect explores — and in Episode 11, we go back to where it all began. What are ghosts? Are they deceased loved ones stopping by to say hello? Residual energy replaying on a loop? Intelligent spirits who answer when you ask? Or something we create ourselves through collective belief?
In this episode: Tina’s mother announces herself with the smell of candy apples on her granddaughter’s birthday. Julie wakes to phantom coffee and toast while caring for her dying father. Laura tells the full story of the impossible teacup — La Campanella, the little bell — inscribed with her grandmother’s name. We dig into drive-by spirits, mimics, timeline shifts, and the Hat Man, seen independently by Tina’s children and neighbors who had never heard of him.
Then, the story our listeners have been waiting for: the ghost soldier of Devil’s Den. A full Civil War apparition in Union garb — boots, footsteps, and all — who killed every recording device simultaneously, answered “From here,” and vanished behind a rock with nowhere to go. (The audio of the footsteps survives. The recorder died right when he arrived.)
